Root barriers

A root does not force its way through the waterproofing — it finds a way through. It seeks out moisture and penetrates any imperfection, joint or overlap that has not been perfectly sealed. And once it has penetrated, the leak does not appear beneath the plant: it appears three metres away, years later. That is why root barrier protection is not an optional extra but a prerequisite for any green roof. Its cost is a fraction of that of repairs — which involve tearing up the garden, locating the leak, and rebuilding the entire layer structure.
