Guide to Correct Tiling in Outdoor Areas: The Ceresit Solution
Laying tiles on a roof terrace or balcony is no simple matter. Extreme summer temperatures and winter damp require a systematic approach to prevent tiles from coming loose and water ingress.
At ARGYNET, following Ceresit’s international standards, we present the four key steps for a result that will last a lifetime.
-
Substrate Preparation & Slopes Before any work begins, the substrate must be clean, stable and, most importantly, have the correct gradients (at least 1.5–2 per cent) to prevent water from pooling.
-
Waterproofing: The ‘Key’ to Success Before applying the adhesive, it is essential to use a flexible waterproofing layer (such as Ceresit CR 166). This protects the concrete from moisture and prevents the formation of efflorescence or blistering on the tiles.
-
Choosing the Right Adhesive (S1 or S2) For outdoor areas, standard adhesive is not sufficient. We need flexible adhesives that can absorb the stresses caused by temperature changes.
For demanding applications: Choose adhesives in category S1 (flexible) or S2 (hyper-elastic).
Our recommendation: Our range features the market’s leading adhesives, which ensure zero slippage and exceptional long-term durability.

- Grouting & Sealing The grout must also be flexible and waterproof. Using Ceresit CE 40 with Silica Active technology ensures that the colour will remain unchanged and the joint will not crack. At corners and where the grout meets parapets, the use of silicone is essential.

Why should you trust the CERESIT System? The CERESIT system for outdoor areas is designed to function as a ‘single unit’. By combining the manufacturer’s expertise with the specialised products available in our shop, you are guaranteed:
Complete protection against frost and extreme heat.
Waterproofing that protects the building’s structure.
A long-lasting, crack-free finish.
