Sound insulation

Description

ISOLFON Barrier is a viscoelastic, mass-loaded vinyl membrane made from high-density EPDM elastomer, free from bitumen. It is installed within a wall or ceiling system — typically between two plasterboards — and significantly improves the sound insulation performance of lightweight building elements through the principle of mass: ARGYNET LAB: Barrier is the product that perfectly complements the rest of the ISOLFON range — the PU/SEP/SE products.PY/Whisper provide sound absorption (reducing reverberation within a space), whilst Barrier provides true sound insulation (preventing sound from passing into an adjacent space). On its own, the membrane has an Rw value of 24.3–30.9 dB, depending on its weight. However, its true value is demonstrated within a complete system: in a plasterboard wall with a metal stud frame, filled with mineral wool and Barrier 5 between two layers of plasterboard on each side, the system achieves an Rw(C,Ctr) of 56(-4,-11) dB — and in masonry with plasterboard cladding, Rw = 60 dB. At ARGYNET, we always recommend the combination of Barrier + mineral wool + sound-absorbing panels (e.g. iZifon) for a comprehensive acoustic solution, rather than Barrier on its own.
