Flooring for children’s bedrooms and playrooms

Solutions & Applications · Residential

A child’s bedroom changes purpose three times — as a nursery, a child’s bedroom and a teenager’s bedroom — but the flooring is laid just once. The choice is made with the next twenty years in mind, not the child’s current age.

The wear layer is the real deciding factor

The transparent wear layer on top of the design is the measure that determines how many years the surface will last before the design underneath begins to show through. For modular vinyl flooring, the suffix of the range — 30, 55, 70 — indicates the category of use for which the product was designed.

However, this rule is not universal. With vinyl rolls, the number often refers to the total thickness rather than the wear layer: ICONIK 260 Tex has a total thickness of 2.6 mm. The wear layer is a distinct measurement and is confirmed in each instance by the technical data sheet, never by the name.

ARGYNET Note

The most common mistake in the home is to choose a wear layer based on the child’s current age. A 0.30 mm floor covering in a nursery is sensible — until the child turns ten and the room is fitted with a desk and a swivel chair, which within two years will have worn a circular groove around the desk. The castor on an office chair causes more damage to domestic flooring than anything else.

At ARGYNET, we specify the system with the building’s entire life cycle in mind, not just its current use.

The neighbour downstairs

In Greek blocks of flats, impact noise from children’s bedrooms is one of the most common causes of friction between tenants. Running, jumping and falling objects are transmitted downwards through the floor slab — and this is precisely the value of ΔLw, the impact noise reduction.

There are two approaches to this:

  • Flooring with an integrated acoustic layer: versions with a foam or cork underlay provide a documented value in dB.
  • Floating installation on an acoustic underlay: the solution for click flooring, where the acoustic performance is derived from the underlay rather than the floorboard.

Note on the method: the acoustic layer is only effective if the floor is a floating floor. A fully bonded floor transmits impact directly to the slab.

Air quality: the child is on the floor

At home, we spend over 90 per cent of our time indoors, and children spend a large part of theirs in contact with the floor — sitting, lying down or playing. Their breathing zone is tens of centimetres above the surface, not one and a half metres.

Consequently, the entire system — flooring, adhesive, substrate — is assessed, rather than just the visible surface layer. UZIN 398-D is odourless after installation, a feature that matters when the room is to be used a few days after the work is completed.

The same applies to foundations: flooring that requires waxing or periodic coatings introduces chemicals into the space every few months, throughout its entire lifespan. Modern surface protection treatments — PUR on rubber, xf² on linoleum — eliminate this need.

The choice between roll-form and modular flooring is not merely a matter of aesthetics. Roll-form flooring provides a continuous, joint-free surface — nothing can get in between, neither liquids nor felt-tip pens. Interlocking flooring allows the worn area around a desk to be replaced without having to strip the entire room.

Design series

  1. Service life: the number of years until the next refurbishment — determined by the wear layer.
  2. Location within the building: ground floor or floor above a dwelling — determines whether an acoustic layer is required.
  3. Underfloor heating: confirmation of the compatibility of materials and methods, and verification that there are no two moisture barriers in the structure.
  4. Substrate: flatness and moisture content prior to ordering.
  5. Installation method: glued for a continuous surface, click or loose-lay where reversibility is a priority.
  6. Perimeter: skirting board flush with the floor, with the movement gap covered but not bridged.
